Almost every second German adult ever donates blood

BERLIN, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Almost every second adult in Germany has ever donated their blood, according to the result of a nationwide survey published by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA), in the lead up to the World Blood Donor Day on June 14.

The survey finds, 52 percent of the men and 43 percent of the women surveyed have ever donated blood. Of these, 23 percent of women and 22 percent of men said they did so in the past 12 months. The age group of 18- to 25-year-olds is particularly active, representing 29 percent of all blood donors.

Heidrun Thaiss, head of the BZgA, said: "Almost every second adult in Germany has ever donated blood. We still urgently need donors. Blood donations are indispensable for medical care. "

The survey was conducted from November 2017 to February 2018 among 3,836 respondents aged 18 to 75 years.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is organizing the World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2018 under the motto -- "Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life".
