LISBON, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of workers took to the streets in Lisbon on Saturday, demanding the improvement of their living and working conditions.

Holding posters, union confederation flags, banners and colorful balloons, the workers from various parts of the country marched along the Avenue of the Republic, in a demonstration demanding several improvements including the increase of minimum national wage to 650 euros in January 2019.

At the end of the demonstration, Secretary-General of the General Confederation of the Portuguese Workers (CGTP) Armenio Carlos announced that a rally will be held before the parliament building on July 6 against the "grievous measures of the revision of the labor legislation presented by the government".

"We urge all workers and the general population to contest and reject the matters that are at stake in the draft law that the government and the employers intend to impose on the workers, the people and the economic and social development of the country," he said, adding that "this is the time to intensify the fight in all sectors."
