MOSCOW, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin spent part of Tuesday handing out national accolades for outstanding achievement during Russia Day, the Kremlin said.

The awards were presented to nine people -- five in the field of science and technology, three in literature and the arts and one in humanitarian activities, according to a Kremlin statement.

"The presentation of the Russian Federation National Awards is one of the more important events of Russia Day. It is a celebration of outstanding Russian citizens and recognition of their services to the Motherland," Putin said at the awarding ceremony.

Highlighting their major accomplishments, Putin extended his congratulations to the award winners and praised their work as an example of special and inspiring strength that opens up space for pursuing scientific quests and creativity.

The president also greeted all Russians on the occasion of the country's national day, which is "a symbol of a free and future-oriented Russia" and "marks the greatness of its centuries-long history, and the victories and accomplishments of many generations."

Russia Day, a national holiday in the Russian Federation, has been celebrated annually on June 12 since 1991. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic on June 12, 1990.
