Former Maldivian president sentenced to 19 months in jail

MALE, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The Criminal Court of the Maldives on Wednesday sentenced former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to 19 months in prison after he was found guilty of obstructing justice, local media reported.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed were also sentenced to jail. The three were charged for allegedly refusing to hand over their mobile phones for a police investigation.

Gayoom was taken into custody from his home in capital Male in February on charges of plotting to overthrow the government. His son in law was also arrested with him.
