SARI PUL, Afghanistan, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Four army soldiers and seven Taliban militants were killed after militants attacked a security checkpoint in Afghanistan's northern province of Sari Pul overnight, a local official said Thursday.

"Taliban militants attacked an army checkpoint in Balghali area on outskirts of provincial capital Sari Pul Wednesday night and the army forces responded to attackers," Zabihullah Amani, provincial government spokesman, told Xinhua.

The fighting lasted for more than five hours and three soldiers and nine Taliban were also wounded, he added.

A temporary unilateral seven-day ceasefire by the Afghan government with Taliban militants went into effect on Tuesday before the end of Ramadan and the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday, but the Taliban outfit continued attacks on government forces.
