ISTANBUL, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police on Thursday detained 18 suspected Islamic State (IS) militants in the cities of Istanbul and Izmir, local media reported.

According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, Turkey's intelligence and counter-terrorism units launched simultaneous operations in four districts in the western city of Izmir and detained 10 suspected militants.

Anadolu said the detainees were believed to be providing financial support to the IS and helping it recruit members.

Eight more suspects were arrested in Istanbul in simultaneous operations in 14 locations, the Hurriyet daily said, adding three others were still being sought.

The suspects nabbed in Istanbul were thought to be trained to carry out suicide bombing attacks and they had traveled to and from conflict zones in Syria, the daily said.

Turkey, which has called for presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24, has come under a spate of deadly attacks over the years that were blamed on the IS.
