LONDON, June 16 (Xinhua) -- More than 120 firefighters were called to tackle a big fire which gutted the Glasgow School of Art early Saturday.

Local media reported that the fire started around mid-night Friday and spread to a neighboring building.

The building's roof and upper floors have been destroyed and firefighters were unable to enter the building because of fears its walls might collapse.

Local residents said the heat of the huge fire could be felt several streets away, with blazing timber and debris falling down on streets.

Police said 27 people from nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

There were no reports of causalities so far.

The famous art school building was damaged by a smaller fire in 2014 and the restoration work was just finished not long ago.

"It's a tragedy that such an important building to the people of Glasgow has been damaged again," said Iain Bushell, a deputy chief officer with the Scottish fire and rescue service. He added that the fire now is under control.

Local community council said students at the school had their graduation ceremony on Friday.
