PHNOM PENH, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian immigration police arrested 35 illegal Nigerian immigrants and a Vietnamese national during raids on their rented houses in Phnom Penh's Meanchey district on Saturday, a senior police official said.
"They were caught for living in Cambodia illegally," Lieutenant General Uk Heisela, director of the General Department of Immigration (GDI)'s investigation and procedure department, told Xinhua, adding that they could be deported to their birth country within a week.
According to the GDI, last year, the Southeast Asian country expelled 2,357 illegal foreigners of 51 nationalities, and a majority of them were Vietnamese nationals.
Under the immigration law, any alien living in the kingdom without valid documents such as passports, visas, or work permits are subject to deportation.
