SYDNEY, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Aussie telco giant Telstra will cut 8,000 employee and contractor positions in the next three years, as part of its latest strategy to "lead the Australian market," the company said on Wednesday.

The job cuts include "removing one in four executive and middle management roles to flatten the structure," the telco said in a statement.

"We are creating a new Telstra that is able to continue to lead the market. In the future our workforce will be a smaller, knowledge-based one with a structure and way of working that is agile enough to deal with rapid change. This means that some roles will no longer be required, some will change and there will also be new ones created," Telstra CEO Andrew Penn said.

"We understand the impact this will have on our employees and once we make decisions on specific changes, we are committed to talking to impacted staff first and ensuring we support them through this period."

Telstra's new strategy also aims to gear up its capabilities in software-defined networking and a digitization program for the consumer, small business and enterprise customer segments.

The publicly listed company has more than 32,000 employees in 20 countries or regions, according to its 2017 annual report.
