NEW DELHI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Indian currency notes valuing more than 1.23 million rupees (around 19,000 U.S. dollars) were damaged by mice inside an unused ATM in India's eastern state of Assam, reported the daily the Indian Express.
Currency notes worth 1.71 million Rupees (around 26,300 U.S. dollars) kept inside the same ATM were left untouched by the mice.
The ATM was located in Laipuli area of Assam's Tinsukia district.
The damaged currency notes were discovered on last week when the ATM was opened for repairs as it had not been in use for over three weeks due to some technical problem. Few mice were also discovered inside the ATM.
The ATM belonged to the State Bank of India (SBI).
Both the SBI officials and the local police confirmed the incident, saying that a formal complaint has been made in this regard, added the daily.
