ZAGREB, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Croatian citizens protested on Wednesday against high fuel prices by stopping traffic across the country for the second time in a week.

The civic initiative "Stop Fuel Price Growth" staged the protest by calling on drivers to stop traffic for one hour in the afternoon.

The biggest traffic jams were seen in the capital Zagreb. Some drivers welcomed the initiative, while others were furious. Police intervened at some locations and documented drivers who stopped the traffic.

The organizers of the protest claim that Croatia is among the countries paying the most for fuel in Europe. They believe that petrol should not cost more than 9 Crotian kuna (1.41 U.S. dollar) per liter.

The current price of petrol in Croatia is around 10.5 kuna (1.64 U.S. dollars) per liter.

In Croatia, excise duties and Value Added Tax (VAT) make up almost 60 percent of the fuel price. On June 8, Croatia's finance minister said the country would not change the excise duties. On June 15, the civic initiative held the first protest against high fuel prices by blocking traffic for 15 minutes.
