BRUSSELS, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel Wednesday called for legal corridors of migration to stop the cruel business of people smuggling and people exploiting human misery, on the occasion to mark the World Refugee Day, according to a press release.

Following a visit by an Amnesty International delegation on Wednesday morning, the Belgian government cabinet demands a cohesive and integrationist approach that harmonizes the different migration policies of the Member States of the European Union.

"It is undeniable that Europe has been confronted for some years with a complex issue of significant migratory pressure. This calls for responsibility, in accordance with the values we carry in the framework of the European project," said the press release.

According to Charles Michel, a collective response to the migratory situation must apply to three distinct areas.

First, the strict reinforcement of the control of the EU's external borders. The Federal Government supports the European Commission's proposals to increase the budget from 12 to 30 billion euros.

Second, the reform of the Dublin Regulation in order to guarantee a real solidarity between European states. Belgium has always advocated a balanced solution, based on the principles of responsibility and solidarity.

Finally, it is necessary to conclude agreements with Third States in a similar fashion to what transpired between the EU and Turkey.

The prime minister also noted that Belgium will continue to conduct a fair but firm human migration policy that meets its international and moral obligations but where "abuses are not tolerated and will be sanctioned".

It is in this spirit that Prime Minister Charles Michel has increased contacts with European leaders (including Angela Merkel, Donald Tusk and Emmanuel Macron) to prepare the European Council of June 28 and 29 where the subject will be discussed.

The prime minister will continue to play an active role in the run-up to the next European Summit.

World Refugee Day, observed on June 20 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.
