SYDNEY, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Queensland state has injected more than 2 million Australian dollars (1.47 million U.S. dollars) of new funding to deter shark attacks at its most popular beaches and continue to save lives from the top marine predators, authorities said on Thursday.
The state's shark control program, which includes nets and drumlines to protect swimmers and surfers, "has undoubtedly saved lives and that's why we will continue to support it," Queensland's Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said in a statement.
"While we continue to monitor emerging technology, the safety of locals and both domestic and international visitors to our beaches is paramount," he said.
Queensland's marine features, including the Gold Coast Surfers Paradise beach resort area and the Great Barrier Reef coral system, are some of Australia's top tourist attractions.
