NEW DELHI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- At least one child was killed and 11 others were injured after a school van plunged into a gorge in northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh Thursday, police said.
The accident occurred at Garli in the state's Mandi district.
"The van ferrying school children to their homes fell into the 100-meter-deep gorge after it veered off the road. The driver lost control of the vehicle that led to the accident," a police official said.
"While one child has been killed, those injured have been admitted to a hospital in Sarkaghat. Four of the injured children are said to be in serious condition," he said.
A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.
India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
