KIEV, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday passed a framework law on national security, which lays down general principles and goals of the state policy in the security and defence sectors.
According to a statement on the parliament's website, the legislation was supported by 248 votes in favor, surpassing the minimum of 226 required.
The law, which is aimed at reforming the Ukrainian armed forces, defines and differentiates the powers of state bodies in the security and defense sectors.
According to the legislation, security forces, defense forces, military-industrial sector as well as citizens and public associations may participate in ensuring Ukraine's national security.
As the "fundamental interests" of Ukraine in the security and defence sectors, the law lists issues regarding sovereignty, territorial integrity, and integration into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU).
