BUCHAREST, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Speaker of Romanian Chamber of Deputies Liviu Dragnea was sentenced in the first trial to 3 years and 6 months imprisonment with execution on Thursday by the High Court of Cassation and Justice, in the file on fictitious employment.
Dragnea, also leader of the main ruling Social Democratic Party, has been accused by anticorruption prosecutors of having used his influence over ten years ago as President of the Teleorman County Council at that time to employ two persons at the local child protection and social assistance directorate, despite the fact that the two were actually working for the local organization of the Social Democratic Party.
Dragnea was charged by the prosecutors with instigation to abuse of office and instigation to forgery in this case.
He was sentenced for instigation to abuse of office, but acquitted of incitement to forgery.
After the verdict, Dragnea insisted he was innocent when speaking to media.
