BUCHAREST, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Speaker of Romanian Chamber of Deputies Liviu Dragnea was sentenced in the first trial to 3 years and 6 months imprisonment with execution on Thursday by the High Court of Cassation and Justice in the file on fictitious employment.

Dragnea, also leader of the main ruling Social Democratic Party, has been accused by anticorruption prosecutors of having used his influence over ten years ago as President of the Teleorman County Council at that time to employ two persons at the local child protection and social assistance directorate, despite the fact that the two were actually working for the local organization of the Social Democratic Party.

Dragnea was charged by the prosecutors with instigation to abuse of office and instigation to forgery in this case.

He was sentenced for instigation to abuse of office, but acquitted of incitement to forgery.

It was his second conviction after he received a two-year suspended sentence in April 2016 for voting fraud in a 2012 referendum to impeach then President Traian Basescu.

The imprisonment on Thursday was comingled with the previous suspended sentence, which the court canceled, hence the new sentence, according to the Supreme Court.

After the verdict, Dragnea insisted he was innocent when speaking to media.

Dragnea kept on telling the judges at previous hearings at the supreme court in the file that he was not involved in the case and rejected all charges. The official claimed he hadn't particularly known the two persons hired at the local institution and that he hadn't the authority to hire them there or at the party.
