Indonesia to ratchet up use of biodegradable plastic to pare pollution

JAKARTA, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government has looked to ramp up outputs of biodegradable plastics to curtail the potential of impending impacts on environment.

Indonesian Minister for Industry Airlangga Hartarto promised to manufacture the eco-friendly products in 10 folds within two years. The drive aims to shift the use of conventional plastics which could be detrimental for the efforts to preserve environment.

"In the two years ahead, the production is set to be scaled up by 10 times," Airlangga said in a statement on Tuesday.

The minister noted that the 10 times production would mean that the total outputs reaching 200,000 tons per year, saying that the current production only meet 5 percent of the goal.

The products would primarily in the form of packaging facilities to be used in both mall shopping centers and traditional markets, he said.

Airlangga cited that the drive shows that the government firmly committed to measures on protecting environment in the country and strongly encouraging development of sustainable industries.
