United flight makes emergency landing in Detroit

CHICAGO, June 26 (Xinhua) -- A United Airlines flight was diverted for an emergency landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Tuesday due to smell of smoke, local media reported.

"Although the odor of the smoke had dissipated, the aircraft was turned over to United's maintenance team for inspection," the Detroit News quoted airport spokeswoman Erica Donerson as saying.

ExpressJet Airlines, who operated the United Flight 4007 from Chicago to Greenville, South Carolina, said the plane had some "mechanical issue" but made a "safe and uneventful" landing in Detroit on Tuesday morning.

According to flightstats.com, the plane is an Embraer RJ145.

Another plane has been dispatched to transport the passengers in the afternoon from Detroit to their final destination.
