RAMALLAH, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Tuesday the Israeli settlers' attack against Palestinians and their holy sites, saying the Israeli government is responsible for those attacks.

The ministry said in a statement that at this stage, the Israeli government sees an opportunity to carry out further colonial expansionist plans, including the completion of Judaization of Jerusalem, expansion of settlements as well as further eliminating the Palestinian presence from the occupied territories.

The statement came in the wake of overnight clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces right after settlers went into West Bank's Nablus city and performed rituals at Joseph's Tomb, a site considered holy to both sides.

Medical sources said over 35 Palestinians, including a female journalist and a child, were injured by Israeli soldiers who fired both rubber-coated and live bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the Palestinians.

Settlers also assaulted Palestinian civilians and their vehicles in Burqa village.

The ministry accused the United States of supporting Israel, allowing the settlers to step up their "provocation and violence against Palestinians and their holy places."

It also called upon the UN Security Council to "accelerate the implementation of international legal mechanisms and procedures to activate the international protection system before it is too late."
