NEW DELHI, June 27 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed after their car rolled into a gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, police said Wednesday.
The accident occurred near Batnaal, some 10 km from Narkanda in Shimla district.
"The car veered off the road and plunged into the deep gorge Tuesday night. All the five occupants of the car died on the spot," a police official said.
Fire brigade was pressed into service to recover the bodies from the mangled remains of the car as the gorge was a deep one, he said.
"Preliminary probe has indicated that the accident occurred as the car driver was speeding while negotiating a sharp bend and thus lost control of the vehicle," the official said.
A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.
The hilly state records a number of deaths each year. Last year, as many as 44 people were killed when a bus they were travelling in swerved off the road and fell into a river.
