WASHINGTON, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Fewer than a majority of U.S. adults are "extremely proud" to be Americans, a record low in 18 years, said a recent Gallup poll.

According to the poll, 47 percent of the respondents describe themselves as "extremely proud" to be Americans, while 25 percent say they are "very proud."

Both numbers marked new low levels since Gallup started polling on the question in 2001.

The "extremely proud" number peaked at 70 percent in 2003, two years after the 9/11 terror attacks against the United States, but declined to 52 percent in 2016 and 51 percent in 2017.

This year, 16 percent say they are "moderately proud" to be Americans, while 7 percent are "only a little" proud and 3 percent are "not at all" proud.

Among Democrats, the poll found that 32 percent are "extremely proud," down 11 percentage points from last year and 24 percentage points from 2013.

As to Republicans, 74 percent of the respondents are "extremely proud," which is numerically the highest over the last five years, according to the poll.

Gallup said politics appears to be a factor for the overall decline, with sharp declines evident among Democrats and political liberals and no decrease among Republicans and conservatives.

Left-leaning groups' antipathy toward U.S. President Donald Trump and their belief that other countries look unfavorably on the president are likely factors in their decline in patriotism, particularly the sharp drops in the past year, according to the consulting company.

The poll surveyed 1,520 adults in the United States on June 1-13, with a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
