BANJUL, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The ECOWAS military intervention in the Gambia (ECOMIG) command announced Thursday the death of Nigerian peacekeeper Abubakar Abdullahi due to irregular breathing.
ECOMIG Commander Colonel Fulgence Ndour said in a statement on Thursday that Abdullahi was Staff Sergeant from the Nigerian contingent.
"The late Abdullahi aged 46, passed on in the early hours of Wednesday, 4th July 2018," said the statement. "He was observed to be experiencing irregular breathing while in his sleep and was rushed to hospital for medical attention. However, he could not survive."
"ECOMIG expresses deepest condolence to the next of kin, family, the Nigerian contingent and the Nigerian Armed Forces for this irreplaceable loss," it added.
ECOMIG mission arrived in Gambia in December, 2016 to enforce the will of the Gambians following the rejection of the election results by the former president, Yahya Jammeh. The force includes nationals from Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries including Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana.
