Canadian stock market down

TORONTO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Canadian main stock market declined Thursday as energy stocks lost ground due to a drop in commodity prices.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index edged down 38.11 points or 0.23 percent to end the day at 16,266.61 points.

Hydro One added 12 cents to 20.25 Canadian dollars, while Fortis Inc rose 34 cents to 42.41 Canadian dollars.

Goldcorp gained five cents to 18.50 Canadian dollars while Kinross Gold added four cents to 5.10 Canadian dollars.

On Thursday, the West Texas Intermediate for August delivery was down 1.20 U.S. dollars to settle at 72.94 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while Brent crude for September delivery was down 0.85 dollar to close at 77.39 dollars a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.

Among energy issues, Imperial Oil lost 13 cents to 43.42 Canadian dollars while Enbridge fell 1.5 percent to 46.14 Canadian dollars.

Metro Inc. fell 1.4 percent to 43.93 Canadian dollars, while Loblaw Companies lost 1.1 percent, to 66.35 Canadian dollars.
