Tokyo stocks close higher as Chinese shares buoy market amid trade tensions

TOKYO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday after Wall Street set a solid tone overnight and Chinese shares rallied despite rising trade tensions.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 241.15 points, or 1.12 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 21,788.14.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 15.34 points, or 0.92 percent, higher to finish at 1,691.54.

Investors bought back issues oversold following the Nikkei retreating for four straight days, with sentiment bolstered by Wall Street closing higher overnight, brokers here said.

Market strategists said that buying here was supported by Chinese shares gaining ground during the day.

By the close of play, electric appliance, pharmaceutical and wholesale trade-linked issues comprised those that gained the most, and rising issues beat falling ones by 1,684 to 362, on the First Section, while 52 ended the day unchanged.

On the main section on Friday, 1,393.56 million shares changed hands, dropping from Thursday's volume of 1,396.09 million shares.

The turnover on the final trading day of the week came to 2,427.3 billion yen (21.94 billion U.S. dollars).
