JERUSALEM, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army Friday struck a Syria military post after a mortar shell landed in the Israeli-Syrian demilitarized zone.

The mortar shell was believed to have been launched from the post and fallen in the buffer zone, east of the security fence and adjacent to it, said the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in a statement.

The launch was "part of the internal fighting between the regime and the rebels in Syria," added the Israeli military.

The military emphasized that the IDF is not involved in the internal fighting in Syria, however, it will continue to implement the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement that includes maintaining the buffer zone.

On Wednesday, the IDF Chief of General Staff, Gadi Eizenkot, visited the "Bashan" Division on the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

During the visit, Eizenkot assessed the situation regarding the fighting in Syria and the readiness of the Northern Command.

"We have a Separation of Forces Agreement with Syria from 1974," said the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. "This is the guiding principle. We will adhere to it very strictly and so must others, everyone."

On Sunday, Netanyahu stated that "we will continue to defend our borders, we will assist as much as we can, we will not allow entry into our territory."

Tens of thousands of refugees have been fleeing to the borders with Jordan and the Golan Heights after Syria's army heavily bombed rebel-held areas in the city of Daraa over the past weeks.
