CAIRO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed and six others injured on Friday in a road accident in the Upper Egypt's province of Minya, an official security source said.

"The accident occurred in Beni Mazar town after a passenger bus collided with a truck loaded with construction materials," the source at the scene told Xinhua.

He said the wounded, some suffering serious injuries, were transferred to Minya Public Hospital, adding that the death toll is expected to rise.

Egypt suffers a high rate of traffic accidents due to lack of highway monitoring systems, poor road maintenance and negligence of traffic rules.

In 2017, some 11,000 traffic accidents in Egypt killed over 3,747 people and injured more than 17,000 others, according to a report from the country's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.
