MEXICO CITY, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Candidate of the "Together We Will Make History" coalition Claudia Sheinbaum won the mayoral election of Mexico City, the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) said Saturday.

The IECM validated the results of the local and national elections on July 1, and gave Sheinbaum the certificate that accredits her as the head of the elected local government for the next six years.

The "Together We Will Make History" coalition is headed by the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) led by newly elected Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

According to the IECM, Sheinbaum received 2.5 million votes of the nearly 5.4 million cast.

Once the local election result was declared to be valid, the IECM's president and advisor, Mario Velazquez, presented Sheinbaum with the validated result to applause from Morena leaders and supporters.

The 54-year-old, who holds a doctorate in renewable energy engineering, became the first woman elected as mayor of the capital, populated by almost 8.9 million people. She will formally take her position on Dec. 5.

Sheinbaum served as the environment secretary when Lopez Obrador held the mayorship of the capital in 2000-2005, and for the past three years was the head of the city's southern delegation, Tlalpan.

Her victory also marks the first defeat in mayoral elections of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in Mexico City since 1997.

Obrador was a PRD member when he won the city's mayorship, but later left to found Morena.

Alejandra Barrales, the PRD candidate, received 1.6 million votes in the mayoral election, said the IECM.
