SEOUL, July 10 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's top nuclear envoy planned to visit Washington this week to discuss nuclear affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Seoul's foreign ministry said Tuesday.
Lee Do-hoon, representative for the Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs who represents South Korea at the long-stalled six-party talks, was scheduled to visit Washington from Wednesday to Saturday.
He reportedly planned to meet with U.S. administration officials in charge of nuclear talks with the DPRK and figures in charge of the Korean Peninsula affairs.
The U.S. officials included Alex Wong, the U.S. State Department's deputy assistant secretary for East Asian affairs, and Matthew Pottinger, senior director for Asian affairs at the National Security Council of the White House.
During the visit, the South Korean diplomat would consult and coordinate, in a working level, on ways to materialize the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the settlement of peace on the peninsula, according to the foreign ministry.
The six-party talks, which involved South Korea, the DPRK, China, the United States, Russia and Japan, have been suspended since late 2008.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Tokyo Monday to talk with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts, after visiting Pyongyang over the weekend to meet with DPRK officials.
U.S. President Donald Trump and top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un held the first-ever DPRK-U.S. summit in Singapore on June 12, agreeing to the Korean Peninsula's complete denuclearization in exchange for security guarantees for the DPRK.
