NEW DELHI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people have been killed after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) rammed into a parked truck in India's Uttar Pradesh state, police said Wednesday.
The accident occurred on Agra-Lucknow Expressway in the northern state's Kannauj district.
"The SUV carrying some 11 people crashed into the container truck at a high speed after its driver failed to spot the heavy vehicle parked on the roadside," a police official said.
While seven people, including three children, died on the spot, one succumbed to his wounds on the way to state-owned Kannauj Medical College, where three others have been admitted, he added.
"The death toll may go up as the condition of all the three injured are said to be serious. They are currently in the intensive care unit of the hospital," the official said.
The victims, who hailed from the western state of Rajasthan, were on a pilgrimage to the Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district when the accident occurred.
"The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem. A probe has also been ordered into the incident. Efforts are on to nab the truck driver who fled the spot after the accident," he added.
