NEW DELHI, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Indian authorities Monday rescued as many as 55 people and their livestock from some 10 trucks that got stuck in flood waters in Andhra Pradesh state.

Several parts of the southern state have been flooded due to heavy monsoon rains and release of water from a river barrage in the past 24 hours.

"Some 10 trucks, carrying 55 people and their sheep, got stranded in flood waters in the state's Srikakulam district. They have now been rescued," a disaster management official said.

Local TV channels showed footage of disaster management officials and Indian Navy personnel using boats to reach the trucks to rescue the stranded people from the middle of a flooded field.

However, 80 of their cattle washed away, reports said.

Floods are common in the southern Indian states during the monsoon month of July.
