NEW DELHI, July 18 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed after a four-storied building collapsed when an adjacent six-storied under-construction residential structure fell on top of it near the Indian capital late Tuesday night, officials said Wednesday.

The incident took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida city, some 45 km from the national capital.

"The four-storied building collapsed just like a pack of cards after the under-construction building fell on top of it. So far, five bodies have been pulled out of the debris by rescuers," a police official said.

The death toll may increase later as several others are still feared trapped under the debris, he added.

Local TV channels aired footage of rescue operations being carried out by fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel throughout the day.

The NDRF said it has pressed into service sniffer dogs, and used sensors and cameras to look for survivors. "This is an unstable collapse. We are working very cautiously here," local NDRF chief P.K. Srivastava told the media earlier in the day.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the local administration chief to keep a tab on the rescue operations and police to help in relief measures.

Meanwhile, police said that four people have been arrested for the building collapse.
