WUXI, China, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The 2018 World Fencing Championships kicked off here on Thursday with all of the eight Chinese fencers from the women's epee team and the men's sabre team making it to the last 64 after the individual preliminary rounds.

As seeded fencers in women's epee, Olympic medalist Sun Yiwen and her teammate Zhu Mingye have advanced into finals directly, while the other six fencers in women's epee and men's sabre have qualified for the finals with quick victories in the preliminary rounds.

Former Olympic champion Zhong Man, who now works as the coach of the Chinese men's sabre team, praised these young fencers after the match. "This is their best performance in 2018, even better than what they did at Asian Championships. Now the game is really on," said Zhong.

The finals of the women's epee and the men's sabre will begin on Sunday. The 2018 World Fencing Championships will continue until July 27 at the Wuxi New Sports Center Gymnasium. Fencers from 108 countries and regions will vie for 12 titles in foil, epee and sabre.

China sent 27 athletes to compete in all the women's and men's individual and team events.
