ACCRA, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has named Jean Adukwei Mensa, Executive Director of think-thank Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), as the new chair of the country's Electoral Commission (EC), the presidency said in a statement on Monday.

The nomination was necessitated by the removal of Charlotte Osei as the EC boss following recommendations by a committee set up to investigate separate complaints brought against Osei alongside two other top EC officials.

The committee recommended their removal on the basis of stated misbehavior and incompetence.

Akufo-Addo also appointed two new deputy commissioners of the election management committee.

The operations of the EC were almost at a halt following the alleged internal rifts and the subsequent removal of the three top officials.

The appointment of the new high-ranking members is therefore expected to get the EC back to work as it readies to conduct a referendum for the creation of new administrative regions later in the year.
