Indian prime minister starts two-day visit to Uganda

ENTEBBE, Uganda, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday started a two-day state visit here in which the two countries are expected to further their trade and economic ties.

Modi was welcomed by President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe, 40 km south of the capital Kampala, after which they went into bilateral talks.

Modi, who is also accompanied by a business delegation, will also address the Ugandan Parliament and also the Indian-Uganda Business Forum. He will also address the Indian community in Uganda.

India is one of Uganda's main trading partners, according to government figures here.

According to Bank of Uganda July 2018 data, India's exports to Uganda for 2017 were worth 599.04 million U.S. dollars, up from 293.87 million in 2007.

India's exports to Uganda were highest in 2013, 1.26 billion dollars before they started to drop, first to 1.24 billion dollars in 2014, 994.93 million dollars in 2015 and 705.37 million dollars in 2016.

Uganda's exports to India increased from 3.21 million dollars in 2007 to 43.69 million dollars in 2017.

India exports to Uganda pharmaceutical products, vehicles, plastic, and organic chemicals among others while Uganda exports to India edible vegetables, coffee, tea, cotton among others.
