DUBAI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Emaar Properties, the first real estate developer of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), announced on Tuesday the plan to build a new mega shopping complex in Dubai.

Covering an area of 2.6 million square meters, the shopping complex, named Dubai Square, will be adjacent to Dubai Creek Tower, which, currently under construction, is poised to top the world's tallest tower, the 828-meter-high Burj Khalifa.

The project "meets the real need for a new generation lifestyle destination, especially given Dubai's growth in population and tourist arrivals," said Mohammed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, in an e-mailed statement.

Dubai Square's gross floor retail space will reach 750,000 square meters, equivalent to the size of 100 football pitches.

Dubai, the first Arab city to host the world expo in 2020, welcomed 15.79 million international overnight visitors in 2017, representing a 6.2-percent year-on-year uptick.
