ALGIERS, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Algeria on Friday condemned the assault that targeted two Saudi Arabian oil tankers in the Red Sea on Wednesday, which Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for.

"Algeria ... considers it (the attack) a serious violation of international maritime law and the right of free navigation, as it would have negative impact on international trade," APS news agency quoted a statement of the Foreign Ministry as saying.

"The attack ... was perpetrated amid efforts by the special UN representative to revive the peace settlement of this conflict which is tearing Yemen apart, " the statement noted.

The Foreign Ministry concluded its statement by reiterating "the solidarity of Algeria with the people of Yemen, and reaffirming its full support for the efforts of the United Nations for a political settlement of the crisis" in Yemen.

Houthi rebels on Wednesday morning attacked two Saudi oil tankers passing by the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea, causing minor damage to one of the two tankers.

The Saudi authorities later announced the suspension of all oil shipments through the strait until navigation could be secured.
