Cambodian ruling party wins majority vote in election

PHNOM PENH, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen won a majority vote in the general election on Sunday, according to National Election Committee (NEC)'s preliminary results.

CPP's spokesman Sok Eysan confirmed the victory, saying that the CPP won more than 80 percent of the votes.

"According to the NEC's preliminary results broadcast on the state-owned National Television of Cambodia, the votes that the people supported the CPP were over 80 percent," he told Xinhua. "Based on this percentage we received, the CPP wins not less than 100 seats in the National Assembly."

Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. local time on Sunday and closed at 3:00 p.m. at all 22,967 polling stations across the kingdom. Around 6.88 million, or 82 percent, of the 8.38 million eligible voters cast their ballots in the election, according to NEC's updated statistics.

The voter turnout was much higher than that in the 2013 election when the voter turnout was at 69.61 percent.

A total of 20 political parties contested in the election, which was held to elect 125 lawmakers for the National Assembly.

Among them are the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the Funcinpec Party of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the League for Democracy Party of former opposition lawmaker Khem Veasna.

The provisional results will be released on Aug. 11, and the official ones will be publicized on Aug. 15, according to a NEC timetable.
