BUENOS AIRES, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay's Mauricio Lambiris on Sunday became the first foreign racer in 50 years to win Argentina's Turismo Carretera (TC).

The last time a foreign competitor won the popular racing series was in 1968, when Italy's Carmelo Galbato won on the Allen circuit, in the country's southern Rio Negro province.

Lambiris, 31, overtook champion Agustin Canapino in a suspenseful final stretch in Rafaela, Santa Fe province, some 500 kilometers from Buenos Aires. The Uruguayan, raced in a Ford Falcon and took home the one-million-peso prize (nearly 36,000 U.S. dollars).

Argentina's biggest annual motorsport event, the TC has been taking place for 81 years, and over the decades a traditional rivalry has developed between Chevrolet and Ford, which has dominated the race.

The TC initially took place along country roads, but following numerous fatal accidents the competition was moved to a racetrack in 1997.

Five-time Formula 1 champion Juan Manuel Fangio won the TC twice, in 1940 and 1941. Today, the race still draws former Formula 1 drivers including Norberto Fontana and Gaston Mazzacane.
