Indonesian security forces hold military drill ahead of Asian Games

JAKARTA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian military staged a military drill on Wednesday, conducted by elite squads from the army, navy and air forces, demonstrating their maximum readiness to secure the 18th Asian Games event slated to be held in Indonesia's two cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

Troops from the three Indonesian military forces simulated a terrorist attack and a hostage situation at the main sports compound of Senayan.

"We are ready to secure the 2018 Asian Games. The drill is not only conducted in Jakarta, but also in Palembang as well," Commander of Indonesian Armed Forces Squad Major General Eko Margiono said.

Besides in the sport venues, security measures would also be applied in athletes' apartments, hotels and the roads leading to the venues, he said.

Some 560 personnel of military elite forces were involved in the drill, using various tactical weapons, vehicles and communication instruments as well as the the K9 units tasked to trace the suspicious people.

Indonesia has completed infrastructure and facility projects to host the Asian Games slated from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2 in the two cities.
