NEW DELHI, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed and eight others injured after their sports utility vehicle (SUV) rammed into a parked car in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Saturday, police said.

The accident occurred near Nikamuddinpur village on Jaunpur-Raebareli highway in the state's Jaunpur district.

"The SUV, carrying 12 people on a pilgrimage and a driver, hit the stationary car at high speed this morning. The impact of the crash was such that five people were killed on the spot. All the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital," a police official said.

The victims were on their way to a temple in the city of Allahabad when the accident occurred.

Eye-witnesses at a nearby roadside eatery told cops that the SUV was travelling at high speed and its driver failed to apply brakes when it suddenly spotted the parked car while overtaking another vehicle from the left side.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said. "A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against the SUV driver," he added.

Road accidents occur in India mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
