KIEV, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday that Ukraine has made a certain progress on its path towards membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

"Ukraine is steadily approaching to the membership in the Alliance... The latest summit of the Alliance confirmed that NATO doors are open to Ukraine," Poroshenko wrote on Twitter.

Ukraine will continue the modernization of its institutional, political and economic spheres with an aim to become a NATO member, Poroshenko added.

Ukraine joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council in 1991 shortly after Kiev gained its independence from the former Soviet Union.

In 2003, Ukraine declared a course towards NATO accession, but revoked the policy in 2010, declaring non-aligned status.

Last year, Ukraine has officially resumed the course towards joining the alliance, pledging to implement reforms in security, defense, justice and anti-corruption sectors.

The latest NATO summit was held Brussels on July 11-12 this year with the participation of leaders of NATO allies and partner nations, including Ukraine.
