LONDON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Palace of Westminster, home of Britain's parliament, heads a list published Tuesday of the 10 most important places in English history famed for uncovering the history of power, protest and progress.

Famous historian David Olusoga headed the panel of judges that selected the top 10 places in the Power, Protest and Progress category from hundreds of public nominations.

From science and discovery to music and literature, Olusoga's list completes Historic England's campaign of exploring, through ten different categories, the 100 places that bring to life England's rich and extraordinary history.

Next month an illustrated book of all 100 remarkable places will be released.

The official citation, published Tuesday, describes the Palace of Westminster as probably the most famous building in Britain and recognizable around the world for its dramatic roofline and iconic clock tower which houses Big Ben.

"It is an internationally-renowned symbol of the seat of democracy and constitutional monarchy with a history that goes back nearly 1,000 years, as a centre of power. It is known by many as the "mother of all parliaments" and was the site for pivotal moments in the story of democracy," said Historic England.

Duncan Wilson, CEO of Historic England, said: "Every place chosen in this category has a fascinating story to tell about the history of power, protest and progress. Throughout this campaign we have been trying to uncover lesser known stories, as well as to delve more deeply into the history of some well-known places. The ten in this category show that there is still so much to learn about our nation's past."

The list also includes the site of a peaceful civil rights protest in Bristol, the Bosworth Battlefield in Leicestershire, and a plaque commemorating 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott.
