SANTIAGO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chile's ex-President Michelle Bachelet on Friday said she was "honored" to be the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The two-time president was elected earlier in the day by the UN General Assembly in New York.

"Deeply humbled and honored to announce my acceptance as the UN's new High Commissioner for Human Rights," Bachelet tweeted

"I will execute this role with all my strength, energy and conviction. This work looks to bring dignity and wellbeing to all people," Bachelet added in a video posted on her social media channels.

On Wednesday, UN chief Antonio Guterres announced Bachelet was his choice for the key role and urged member nations to approve his choice. She will officially begin the four-year term on Sept. 1.

Chile's President Sebastian Pinera congratulated Bachelet, saying "this is a reflection of the active role Chile plays in the defense and respect of human rights."

She served as Chile's president from 2006-2010 and again from 2014-2018. Bachelet was also the head of UN Women from 2010-2013.
