TRIPOLI, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Libyan navy on Sunday said it rescued 60 illegal immigrants on a broken rubber boat off the country's western coast.
The navy said that the rescue operation took place off the town of Surman, some 50 km west of the capital Tripoli, and that the immigrants included four children.
Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Gaddafi's regime, Libya became a preferred point of departure for illegal immigrants wanting to cross the Mediterranean towards Europe.
Improved weather conditions increase flows of illegal immigrants towards Europe, especially off western Libyan coast.
