China has 585 publishing houses by end of 2017

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- There were 585 publishing houses across China by the end of 2017, including 219 state-owned publishing houses and 366 privately-owned ones, according to a report on the country's publishing industry.

The report, issued by the State Administration of Press and Publication, said 48.52 billion copies of publications, including books, journals, newspapers, audio and video products, and electronic publications, were released in China last year.

More than 9.24 billion copies of books were published, up 2.3 percent from 2016, with 255,106 new books coming out during the year, accounting for 2.27 billion copies.

A total of 2.49 billion copies of 10,130 different journals were published, almost half of which were on natural science or technology.

China also saw the publication of 1,884 different newspapers in 2017, with 981 national and province-level newspapers, 884 at regional and municipal levels, and 19 at county level, according to the report.
