Chinese shares close lower Tuesday

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares ended lower Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.18 percent to close at 2,780.96, and the Shenzhen Component Index down 0.68 percent to close at 8,784.9.

Losers outnumbered gainers at 670 to 623 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,102 to 816 in Shenzhen.

Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 268.5 billion yuan (about 39 billion U.S. dollars), down from 300.6 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, was down 0.84 percent to close at 1,518.49.

Information technology firms were among the heaviest losers, with Beijing Tensyn Digital Marketing Technology Joint Stock Company plunging 9.3 percent to end at 8.97 yuan.

The oil industry performed well despite the market's downward trend. Offshore Oil Engineering went up 5 percent to close at 5.88 yuan, while China Oilfield Services gained 4.26 percent to finish at 10.78 yuan.
