NICOSIA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Cyprus insists on peace agreement and an end to its division without the presence of occupation troops and without guarantee and intervention rights, a statement issued on the occasion of its occupation anniversary on Tuesday said.

Cyprus marked on Tuesday the second phases of a military operation by Turkish troops in 1974, which led to the occupation of more than a third of its territory.

Turkey, however, said it acted in response to a coup by the military rulers of Greece at the time.

"We remain committed to a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem with the withdrawal of the occupying army and the implementation of the UN guidelines for a solution, as well as to the principles and values of the EU, of which our country is a member state," the statement by the government spokesman said.

It added that the Greek Cypriot side, which represents the internationally recognized government of Cyprus, has responded positively to an initiative by the UN Secretary General to restart the stalled Cyprus negotiations after a hiatus of 13 months.

The spokesman said that Greek Cypriots are looking forward to a peaceful future of coexistence and shared prosperity with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots.
