6.4-magnitude quake hits near Iwo Jima island off Japan -- USGS

HONG KONG, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 jolted 252 km southeast off Iwo Jima island, Japan, at 3:22 local time early Friday (1822 GMT Thursday), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 11.75 km, was initially determined to be at 23.4408 degrees north latitude and 143.3414 degrees east longitude.
