LUSAKA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Zambia on Friday suspended four police officers who were caught getting bribes from motorists at an illegal checkpoint.
On Thursday, Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo found the four police officers collecting bribes from motorists for various traffic offenses without issuing them with receipts, with the video of the incident going viral on social media.
Kakoma Kanganja, Inspector-General of the Zambia Police, said the police officers have been suspended because their behavior was shameful and an embarrassment to the institution.
Further investigations have been instituted into the alleged corrupt practices, he added.
"This should serve as a warning to all other officers in the system that my command will not support any corrupt activities among police officers. Any misconduct involving police officers will not be taken lightly," he said in a statement.
The police, he said, are expected to show exemplary behavior as they belong to a law enforcement agency, adding that the police have since launched a direct deposit system where fines for traffic offenses will be directly deposited into commercial banks.
